Refaat is a civil engineer, a devoted father, and now, the administrative manager for Falasteen Freed’s on-the-ground initiatives in Gaza. Despite unimaginable hardships, he continues to fight for his family’s survival and for the people around him.

A Father’s Sacrifice

In spring 2024, Refaat made an impossible decision. He sent his wife and critically ill daughter, Noura, to Egypt for urgent medical care, using every last resource he had to get them out. Now, after a year of being stranded in a hospital room, Noura and her mother have been transferred to a small apartment south of Cairo because the hospital could no longer provide the care Noura needs. They are now struggling to survive without Refaat, desperately searching for a specialist who can continue Noura’s urgent treatment.

Meanwhile, Refaat remains trapped in Gaza, enduring starvation, cold, and worsening health—all so he can keep supporting his family from afar.

"Every day is a fight for survival. Food is scarce, and even bread has become a luxury. I send what little I have to my family in Egypt, but my own health is deteriorating. My pacemaker battery is expired, and I have no way to get the medical care I need."

A Life-Threatening Health Crisis
