Maha and Her Family

My name is Maha Mahmoud Edwan, I am 18 years old from Beit Hanoun in Gaza.
I used to live a safe and decent life with my family. We had a home where we lived, and another house that was almost finished just one month before the war. We were preparing to move into it. But the war came and changed everything.

My father worked as an engineer and owned his own engineering office, and he also worked as a mathematics teacher. He was known for his intelligence and hard work. He worked constantly to provide us with a safe and dignified life and never allowed us to feel need or deprivation. But the war completely destroyed his engineering office, and we lost our only source of income.

We lost both of our homes, and my father lost his work and all of the savings he had. We were also left with debts we cannot repay. Every day that passes becomes harder than the one before. It hurts me deeply that I cannot provide the most basic needs for my family such as food, water, medicine, and clothing.

My Family
My family consists of 8 members:

• My grandmother Maryam – 73 years old
• Me, Maha – 18 years old
• My sister Naha – 16 years old
• My brother Yousef – 13 years old
• My brother Mustafa – 9 years old
• My little sister Jwan – 3.5 years old 
• My parents

Two Years of Displacement
From the very first night of the war, we were forced to leave our home. That night was the last time we ever saw it.
During the two years of war, we were displaced more than 10 times. Each time we lost another piece of our lives and the little belongings we had left.
For nearly two years, we lived in tents under extremely harsh conditions.

These are our expenses each month and why we need your help: 

• Apartment Rent ($500 a month): I am trying to secure rent for a small apartment for my family after all this displacement and homelessness. We have to pay $500 each month to stay housed.
• My Sick Grandmother (~$350 a month for medications): My grandmother suffers from: Chronic high blood pressure, heart problems, an old injury in her leg that requires urgent surgery
  But the war and our difficult conditions prevented us from treating her.
  The constant displacement and exhaustion have weakened both her body and spirit, and she needs ongoing medical care. She requires about $350 per month for medications and pain relief just to be able to stand and move.
• My Mother's Suffering: My mother endures extremely difficult daily work.
  She washes clothes by hand and cooks over fire because there is no electricity.
  This constant physical strain has caused severe pain in her back and legs day and night. Recently, the arteries in her left leg have become severely swollen, and she can no longer tolerate the pain. She urgently needs surgery. We are afraid that the swollen arteries could rupture, which could put her life in serious danger. For now, I am trying to provide her with rest and the medical care she needs.
• My Younger Siblings Between Illness and Hunger: My younger brother Mustafa has become very weak physically. He suffers from thalassemia and anemia, and malnutrition during the famine has worsened his health condition. During the winter I worry deeply about him because he cannot tolerate the cold and becomes sick easily.
  My little sister Jwan (3.5 years old) has lived her entire life during the war.
  She has never experienced wearing new clothes or eating healthy food that helps a child grow properly like other children around the world.
• No New Clothes Since the War Began: From the first day of the war we left our home without being able to take our clothes.
  For the past two years we have been wearing the same few clothes, which have now become torn and worn out and do not keep us warm.
  Now, as Eid al-Fitr approaches, I hope to buy new clothes for my family.
  We have lived through four Eids during the war without being able to celebrate any of them because of the difficult circumstances.
  I hope this Eid can be a little different for my family.
